iOS 26: Major Redesign and AI Enhancements Explained

Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is now underway, and as expected, one of the most anticipated announcements is the latest version of iOS. While previously rumoured as iOS 19, it now appears Apple will align its naming convention with the calendar year, launching iOS 26. If this naming shift holds, we can expect macOS, iPadOS, and watchOS to follow suit a logical move to help users and developers more easily track software updates.

But beyond the name change, iOS 26 looks set to be one of the biggest overhauls in recent Apple history. Here’s what you need to know.

A New Look: The First Major Visual Redesign in Over a Decade

iOS 26 introduces the most significant design update since iOS 7 back in 2013. Drawing inspiration from Apple’s VisionOS (used in the Vision Pro headset), the new UI features soft transparency, glass-like effects, and refined rounded app icons. Expect a cleaner, more modern look across the entire Apple ecosystem, from iPhones to iPads and Macs.

This shift isn’t just cosmetic. Apple appears to be targeting simplicity and ease of use, particularly for first-time users or businesses deploying Apple devices to staff unfamiliar with iOS.

AI Takes Centre Stage: Smarter Siri and Context-Aware Features

While iOS 18 introduced tools like Genmoji and Image Playground, iOS 26 is poised to integrate generative AI deeper into the operating system. Siri is expected to become significantly more intelligent, with a contextual awareness engine that can make real-time suggestions, manage tasks across apps, and improve energy management.

This aligns with the global trend: in 2024, 63% of UK businesses reported integrating AI into at least one workflow, with Apple now clearly investing in the everyday productivity layer. Expect smart suggestions in Calendar, Mail, Notes, and potentially even health tracking apps.

Practical Upgrades for Real Life

It’s not all flash. Several practical features are expected to arrive with iOS 26:

  • Charging Time on Lock Screen: Gives users real-time charging estimates.
  • New Games App: A clean replacement for the ageing Game Center, offering better tracking, friend lists, and integrations.
  • Translate with AirPods: Live, in-ear translations, likely to appeal to business travellers and global teams.
  • Health+: A new suite under the Apple Health banner. Features could include AI-powered food tracking and health recommendations — an area Apple has signalled increasing interest in.
  • Messages App gets RCS: Finally allowing smoother messaging between iPhones and Android devices, along with encryption and better media sharing.

Network Improvements and Accessibility

iOS 26 may also address longstanding frustrations around public Wi-Fi by streamlining logins in airports, cafés, and hotels. Other expected upgrades include:

  • Improved Background Sounds: Enhanced wellness features for focus and mental health.
  • New Bilingual Keyboard (Arabic-English): Catering to Apple’s growing global audience.
  • eSIM Transfer to Android: A long-awaited feature that reflects Apple’s slight softening of ecosystem lock-in.

Real-World Reach: Why This Update Matters

According to StatCounter, Apple holds 29.4% of the global mobile OS market as of May 2025, with the UK showing even stronger adoption — iOS makes up over 50% of smartphones in active use. This update could affect millions of users overnight, including businesses relying on iPhones for communications, sales, and customer service.

The new AI-driven tools and design upgrades are not just for tech enthusiasts. They could redefine how iOS devices are used in business, education, healthcare, and more streamlining workflows, improving accessibility, and encouraging smarter device usage.

What’s Next?

Although the above details are based on leaks and reliable sources, Apple has a reputation for surprises. The keynote may reveal features not yet rumoured or expand on the tools already mentioned.
